Come On, Let’s Focus

I had a strange concern that this post’s topic would be a little contradictory to the previous one. No? Maybe it isn’t and I’m merely overthinking it. Now that I think about it further, that seems more likely.

Well, in my random thoughts for today, a very relatable issue came to the forefront of everything else. Distractions. We all deal with them in some form or fashion. For some reason, they always come at the most inconvenient of times like when you’re studying for an exam or during an important meeting. For me, it just so happens to be at moments when I sit down to work on story projects.

Honestly, it’s like distractions have a conference call so they can discuss where to

have their next pop-up. Not to mention that the biggest source of these distractions are small screens nestled in the palms of our hands. What’s more, I’m not sure if this is a habit for you guys, but I tend to beat myself up mentally when I allow things to distract me. Pretty terrible, huh? I mean, it’s not the worst thing in the world, but it still seems like a silly thing to berate yourself for. At the same time, though, I’m sure there are others who do the same. How about we make the decision together to kill that habit? I like the sound of that!

You can get yourself back on task even when distractions come. Something I’ve been intentional about lately is to make sure I’m in a quiet setting whenever I write. On the other hand, I’m not a huge fan of complete silence. That’s why I usually put on some soft music to help drown out the silence, and troubling thoughts that come with it. I only put on instrumental music, however, nothing with lyrics. I know me and playing something with lyrics will turn my quiet writing time into a full-on talent show! What are some methods you use to battle distractions? I’d love to hear them!
